RIO DE JANEIRO, June 4 (Xinhua) -- An 18-year-old man died on Monday after being bitten by a shark while swimming at a beach in Recife, capital of Brazil's northeast state of Pernambuco, hospital sources said.
The victim, identified as Jose Ernesto Ferreira, was swimming with friends Sunday at the city's Piedade Beach when the attack occurred. He was taken to Restauracao Hospital for emergency surgery, but did not survive.
The hospital's director, Miguel Arcanjo, told Brazil's G1 news website the victim was unconscious when he arrived and eight different surgeons worked on his revascularization procedure, but the patient succumbed to his injuries.
Ferreira's death brings the number of deaths from shark attacks in Recife to 25, with 65 incidents registered since 1992, according to the State Committee for the Monitoring of Shark Incidents (Cemit).
