LONDON, July 14 (Xinhua) -- Swiss World Cup forward Xherdan Shaqiri has joined Liverpool from relegated Stoke City, the Champions League runner-up announced on Friday.
Shaqiri has signed a long-term contract with the Reds. The transfer fee was not disclosed, but media reported it to be 13 million pounds with release clause.
"I'm very happy that I'm here. I'm a player who wants to improve and this is the perfect place for me to help the team and help this club win titles," said Shaqiri in his first official interview at Liverpool.
The Swiss winger will wear the No.23 shirt, the same as his number at the national team.
"He is someone who makes a big difference to the squad and team, because he can fit in so many positions in our system. He gives us greater flexibility in how we can use our current players also," coach Jurgen Klopp commented.
Shaqiri scored 8 goals for Stoke City in the 2017-18 season. His highlighted performance on the World Cup helped Switzerland made it to the last 16.
