RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- A second-half goal from former Cagliari and Torino full-back Danilo Avelar handed Corinthians a 1-0 victory over Chapecoense in Brazil's Serie A championship on Wednesday.
Avelar latched onto a Clayson corner to rifle a header past goalkeeper Giovanni Tiepo just after the hour mark at Chapecoense's Arena Conda.
Corinthians have now won three consecutive matches to move to fourth in the standings with 11 wins, eight draws and three losses, eight points behind leaders Flamengo. Chapecoense are rooted to last place with three wins, six draws and 13 losses.
In Wednesday's only other match, Vasco da Gama continued their resurgence under former Real Madrid and Brazil boss Vanderlei Luxemburgo with a 2-1 win at Atletico Mineiro.
Vasco, who were in the relegation zone when Luxemburgo took charge in May, are now 13th in the 20-team standings with seven wins, six draws and nine losses. Enditem
